ABOUT XYLITOL

Some information on how Xylitol was discovered and how it's made.

About XYLITOL

Who discovered Xylitol first is a topic for debate that may never be settled but the finder is either French or German depending on who you talk to. However, it wasn't until sugar shortages caused by World War 2 that Finnish scientists turned to the production on Xylitol on a much larger scale.

However, it wasn't until 1970's that a Finnish team of scientists noticed that Xylitol actually had a lot of health benefits. They discovered firstly that Xylitol was insulin-independent which made it perfect for sweetening food for diabetics since Xylitol doesn't need the body to produce insulin to metabolise Xylitol.

Further to this they discovered that Xylitol helped reduced cavities in the teeth of users through killing bacteria linked to plaque and decay whilst also stimulating the production of saliva which lowers the acid levels in the mouth again helping to promote oral health.

Because over half of Finland is covered with Birch trees which the Xylitol is made from, they had a permanent source from which to produce Xylitol. However, for other countries Xylitol is made from corn which produces exactly the same Xylitol molecules but more easily and more cost effectively.
